Ernie Cline Talks Fanboys And Japan

Posted By Justin on February 22, 2010

While Star Wars fans across the globe are currently in full celebratory swing for the 30th anniversary of The Empire Strikes Back, we've also seen reason for celebration in honor of another entry in the Star Wars galaxy (though on a slightly lesser scale). If you've been keeping up with the story posts here on TFN, you'd know that our own Mandy B. got the chance to chat with Fanboys director Kyle Newman in a great interview segment. We recently celebrated the one year anniversary of Fanboys on February 6th, Kyle's "love letter" to Star Wars and instant fan hit. Then we received word of the film's upcoming theatrical and DVD release in Japan coming later this year.

It's been a busy start to 2010 for Kyle & crew, as Fanboys continues to roll on and gather more & more attention from Star Wars fans everywhere.

This update comes to us courtesy of Ernie Cline's latest blog post entry entitled "Fanboys and Japan". In case you were wondering who Ernie Cline is, he is one of the co-screenwriters for the film. Check out an excerpt from his blog below and then click HERE for the full read.

"From the very beginning, Japan has been home to some of the world’s most enthusiastic and die-hard Star Wars fans. (Which is one reason why the Star Wars Celebration held there in 2008 was such a huge success.) So you ‘d think that Japan would be one of the first foreign countries where Fanboys would be released, right? But no. Somehow, it got skipped altogether.

This upset me on many levels. I’ve had a lifelong obsession with Japanese pop culture, and it has always been a dream of mine to contribute to it in some small way. As a kid, I was addicted to Japanese anime, movies, and television shows. Ultraman, Robotech, Voltron, G-Force, Speed Racer, Godzilla, Gamera, and the Space Giants. There is no doubt that Japan helped make me the geek I am today. So I was extremely bummed out that my movie wasn’t going to be released there."
